The sculpture Fatherhood from 2014 is one of the more personal works of sculptor Dalibor Šebesta. Here, the artist depicts a seahorse, a creature that fascinated him from childhood and became a symbol of the unique bond between a father and his offspring. In nature, the seahorse is exceptional because it is the male that carries and cares for the young, making it a natural symbol of fatherhood, responsibility, and protection for the artist.
The work is carved from Czech Kotýz limestone, whose natural texture and warm tones give the sculpture its distinctive character. The material, with its structure reminiscent of ancient marine sediments, creates a natural connection between the subject of the work and its physical substance.
Measuring 189 × 55 × 35 cm and weighing approximately 380 kg, the sculpture appears elegant and natural. Its vertical composition emphasizes the graceful form of the seahorse while highlighting the fine details of the stone carving.
The sculpture is particularly well suited for outdoor settings, where both its symbolic and decorative qualities can fully emerge. An ideal location is near a garden pond, natural swimming pond, or pool, where the marine motif gains an additional layer of meaning and harmoniously connects the artwork with its surroundings.
